1. According to the axis of shaft connected
(i) Both axis are parallel
a) Spur gears
Teeths are straight and parallel to the axis of rotation
b) Helical gears
Teeths are straight but inclined to the axis of rotation.
c) Double helical gear (Herring bone gear)
Axial thrust is very minimum.
(ii) Both axis are intersecting
a) Bevel gear
Rolling motion transmitted between two conanical surfaces.
b) Mitre gears
When shafts are intersecting perpendicular to each other.(iii) Axis are neither parallel nor intersecting
(a) Spiral gears (Skew bevel gear)
(b) Worm and worm wheel
connecting two perpendicular shaft but neither intersecting nor parallel
2. According to the type of gearing
(a) External gearing
(95% used) and both gears rotates in opposite direction
(b) Internal gearing
(5% used) and both gears rotates in same direction
(c) Compound gearing
When more than one gear is mounted on same shaft
